Muhimbili National Hospital has performed a cataract surgery through the modern method of small holes (Phacoemulsification) where it is the first in public hospitals in the country to perform this surgery.
Director of Surgical Services, Dr. Rachel Mhaville has said that this surgery has gone hand in hand with training to build the capacity of local specialists as well as other hospitals with the aim of enabling this service to reach more Tanzanians.
He said that MNH is struggling to provide expert and professional services to Tanzanians and neighboring countries to ensure that the National Referral Hospital becomes a center for medical tourism.
Muhimbili continues to pave the way under the leadership of the Executive Director Prof. Mohamed Janabi and live the dream of Hon. President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to encourage medical tourism in the country and achieve what we want to achieve as a country” explained Dr. Mhaville
Explaining about the surgery, Muhimbili Ophthalmologist Joachim Kilemile has said that this surgery is different from the one that was used before where the patient had to have a large section opened to be able to remove the cataract.
According to Dr. According to Kilemile, this surgery has many benefits because the patient recovers in a short time and continues his activities as usual where about 50 patients will benefit from the service.
“The reasons for a person to get cataracts are old age, various diseases including diabetes for those who are young especially when the disease is not well controlled, kidney and skin diseases” said Dr. Kilimele
On the other hand, the Resident Director of Vision Care Tanzania Institute Mrs. Jieun Park has said that Vison Care will continue to work with Muhimbili to build capacity for professionals and support access to medical equipment to continue improving Muhimbili’s eye services.
