Muhimbili National Hospital has performed corrective surgery on 23 patients who had an accident and severed some muscles and nerves in various parts of the body including hands and feet.
The camp started on November 20 to 28, 2023 where it has involved MNH Surgeons in collaboration with experts from the Rafiki Institute in Australia.
Speaking at the conclusion of the camp, the Head of the Department of Surgery at Muhimbili National Hospital, Dr. Laurean Rwanyuma has said that the camp has been held with great success where they have managed to connect the nerves and muscles of patients who had an accident that caused those organs to be injured.
“If a person has an accident, they can cut their arms or legs and cause some nerves to cut off communication, so what we do is to connect those nerves by taking nerves from another part, especially the part of the leg, and connecting them to the part of the body that has lost communication so that it can return to its normal state. initially” explained Dr. Rwanyuma
“In addition to performing surgery on patients who had various accidents, we have also operated on other patients who had cancerous tumors in the head, so we have removed the tumor and made adjustments in that part,” said Dr. Rwanyuma
Dr. Rwanyuma added that the cab has gone along with providing training to the therapists to be able to attend to the patients once they start coming to the clinic after the surgery.
For his part, the Sleep Specialist and Consultant Surgeon from the Rafiki Institute has congratulated the Muhimbili experts for the cooperation they showed in the camp and said that they will hold another such camp next year in the third month.
And the Acting Executive Director Muhimbili National Hospital, Dr. Julieth Magandi has thanked the institution for collaborating with Muhimbili and asked them to continue the collaboration as it has great benefits in improving Muhimbili surgery services.
