JNHPP Hydropower Project Officially Completed – Dr. Biteko

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko has urged Tanzanians to rely on reliable electricity after the Julius Nyerere Dam Hydropower Project, which was eagerly awaited by Tanzanians, was officially completed.

Minister Biteko said this on April 5, 2025 after visiting the Project accompanied by Ministers who are the Minister of State in the President’s Office, Planning and Investment, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, and the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office, Union and Environment, Engineer Hamadi Masauni.

He said all nine plants are operational, explaining that the completion of the Project was contributed to the vision of the Sixth Phase President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, who received the Project when it was 33 percent of its implementation and within the four years of her leadership, she was able to complete the Project.

“We have come today with great joy that all nine plants have been completed and are generating electricity and I am happy to inform Tanzanians that the dream of having electricity from this major source in Africa has been fulfilled, the remaining work is to strengthen the infrastructure to deliver electricity to Tanzanians”, he said, Dr. Biteko stressed.

Dr. Biteko said that due to the country having the ability to generate electricity on a large scale, the Government is now in the process of completing negotiations with the country of Zambia for the sale of electricity and an electricity line to connect the two countries is already being built.

“What we have been talking about for many years that Tanzania will have the ability to sell electricity abroad has now come true during this period of the sixth phase of the Government after the great impetus of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, we are very grateful to His Excellency the President”, he said

For his part, the Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Hon.

Professor Kitila Mkumbo said the completion of this project is an economic liberation while the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office for Union and Environment, Mr. Hamadi Masaun said Tanzania has entered history in Africa where he said the main task remaining is to maintain water sources to protect the Project.

In another step, Hon. Dr. Doto Biiteko thanked the Tanzania Electricity Corporation TANESCO for the implementation of the Project on an international scale and congratulated the Executive Director of the Corporation, Hon. Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, for his management and efforts in managing various electricity projects.

The Julius Nyerere Power Plant Project has cost more than 6.5 Trillion Shillings, where the government has so far paid more than 99.5 percent.
