Women-owned mine contributes 800 million shillings.

Manda Gold Mine, owned by women under the chairmanship of Mrs. Asha Msangi has contributed 800 million shillings to the Government’s revenue for the 2024/2025 financial year.

The mine, which is largely run by women, is located in Kahama Village, Mwime, Zongamela County, which has a small-scale mining license and has employed more than 200 youth.

Speaking in an interview, the owner of the mine who is also the Chairman of the women miners there, Mrs. Asha Msangi said Before the mining activities started, they were doing small businesses and selling food.

He said he later moved to crops and transporting rice to Arusha, however, the business was difficult, so I moved to mining.

He said he was digging in people’s mines, he gained experience and I applied for a license and was given one as a trial but thankfully I did well and was trusted and now I own 12 licenses, I have also formed women’s groups with whom I collaborate in digging.

The Resident Mining Officer of Kahama, Mr. Leons Welengeile said the Manda mine is an important stakeholder and provides employment to many youth and women through the activities going on in the mine.

“For this financial year 2024/2025 from July 2024 to February 2025, the Manda mine has contributed 810 million shillings to the Government’s revenue and that is through royalties and inspection fees collected by the Kahama Mining Commission.

Mr. Leons said that the Government’s revenue in the Kahama Mining Region has continued to increase year on year from the collection of 97 billion shillings in 2022/2023, 101 billion shillings in 2023/2024 and for the year 2024/2025 to March 2025, an amount of 88.08 billion shillings has been collected, which is equivalent to 85 percent of the 9-month collections.

He said he believes that with the current trend until the end of the year, they will be able to achieve the collection target as intended.
