A TOTAL of 1,356 licenses have been issued by the three Kahama Mining Regional Councils, namely Ushetu, Msalala and Kahama, with locals and foreign investors urged to take advantage of the opportunities available in the region.
Speaking, the Resident Mining Officer of Kahama, Mr. Leons Welengeile said there are a total of 77 mining licenses and large mining licenses are in two areas, namely the Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi mines.
“Currently, activities are taking place in the Bulyanhulu mine and the Buzwagi mine is in the mine installation stages”, said Mr. Leons
He said that apart from the mine installation stages, there are also areas designated as Special Economic Zones in the Buzwagi mine area for industrial investment activities and there are areas designated for educational institutions.
“In that area, approximately 13 square kilometers have been set aside as a special investment area where various activities are ongoing, including investment in the manufacture of various equipment and spare parts used in mines, gunpowder manufacturing factories and mineral value-added factories”, said Mr. Leons
There are areas that have been set aside for investment by educational institutions, especially technical education, which are aimed at promoting understanding and expertise among citizens around Kahama District in various mining activities.
“In addition, we manage seven medium-scale mining licenses and two are in the mine installation stage, but there are also four licenses in the development stage and one is in the mining stage”, he said
Mr. Leons said that up to February 2025, they have issued 1,270 small-scale mining licenses, 40 percent of which have been developed, 60 percent are in various research stages.
He said there are many opportunities in the Kahama Mining Region, which are opportunities for the mining trade where there is one market and five mining purchasing centers.
He said there is an opportunity to build mining processing plants, which are currently few because miners have been motivated to abandon the use of mercury to use processing through CIP plants.
He said the Kahama Mining Region has three projects to develop small-scale miners through Technical Support Agreements, namely Shangaza, LHT and Super Mabomi.
“Initially, production activities in those areas were few, the average was one or two kilograms of gold ore was being produced, but due to investments made through the Technical Support Agreement, we have witnessed in those areas that production has now increased to an average of five kilograms of gold ore per partner”, he said
