An amount of Shs. 1.3 trillion has been spent on improvements in the infrastructure for providing health services, medical equipment and supplies, medicines and the quality of primary health care services in the country.
The Director of the Department of Health, Social Welfare and Nutrition, Office of the President, TAMISEMI, Dr. Rashid Mfaume said this, February 19, 2025 while discussing the achievements of the Sixth Phase Government in the provision of primary health services in the country.
He said the funds have been used to invest in primary health and contribute to the increase in infrastructure where so far there are 6163 dispensaries, 932 health centers and 188 district hospitals.
“So far there are 129 new district hospitals that have been built in remote areas, 48 old hospitals have been upgraded, 367 health care centers with the capacity to perform surgeries and blood transfusions”, said, Dr. Mfaume
He said the investment has helped reduce maternal and child mortality from 556 live births to 104 in every 1000 live births.
He said in rural areas there was a major challenge in deploying health workers and it was due to the lack of housing but so far the Government has built 270 houses for them.
He continued to say the Government has built 86 emergency service buildings, purchased 382 ambulances to be distributed to all councils and during that period 25,936 workers have been employed.
