The speed of electricity distribution has moved to the suburbs – Kapinga

📌 Electricity in the suburbs has reached 52.3 percent 📌 Kilindi miners get electricity

The government through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), has completed the distribution of electricity to all 12,318 villages in the country, the work that is currently underway is to distribute electricity to the suburbs.

The Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga said that by January, 2025 the work of distributing electricity to the villages had been completed and currently the power of distribution of electricity has moved to the suburbs.

Mrs. Kapinga said on February 04, 2025 in parliament in Dodoma while responding to a question by the Member of Parliament for Special Seats, Mrs. Jacquelune Andrew who wanted to know when the Government would complete the distribution of electricity to the suburbs in the country.

“The Government has delivered electricity to 33,657 out of 64,359 suburbs, equivalent to 52.3 percent”, She said, Mrs. Kapinga

She added that the remaining 30,702 sub-districts will receive electricity through the sub-district electricity distribution project plan, the Government has already prepared a plan to provide electricity to 20,000 sub-districts for a period of 5-10 years, starting from the 2023/24 Financial Year.

Mrs. Kapinga said 4,020 sub-districts are already in the implementation plan through various projects.

Responding to a question from Kilindi MP, Mr. Omar Kigua who asked what the Government’s plan is to provide electricity to all mining areas in Kilindi, Ms. Kapinga said Kilindi District has about 12 gold mining areas, of which 4 areas have already been provided with electricity.

He mentioned the areas with electricity as Mafulila, Mfyalime/Najim, Masagulu Muheza and Chanungu.

In the Matanda area, a contractor called DIEYNEM Co. Ltd is continuing with the work of installing electricity infrastructure and expects to complete the work soon.

Mrs. Kapinga has emphasized that other remaining mining areas will receive electricity through various projects that will follow.

Regarding the implementation of the solid grid project in the Mkata and Kilindi areas, Mrs. Kapinga said they are continuing negotiations with the Ministry of Finance to allocate funds to implement the project.

Responding to a question by Kiteto MP, Mr. Edward Olelekaita who wanted to know the Government’s statement due to citizens burning equipment due to power outages, Mrs. Kapinga said the Government has a mechanism to protect electricity users through EWURA and provide advice to citizens who have been affected to handle complaints through EWURA.

Responding to a question by Iringa MP, Mrs. Jesca Msambatavangu who wanted to know when the Government will start supplying electricity to 15 streets in each constituency including Iringa Urban, Mtalagala and Msisima, Mrs. Kapinga said the contractor is already at the work site and has completed the verification.

She said on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, he has directed the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) to come up with a strategy to have steel poles so that they can be located in mountainous areas.
