Mloganzila to transplant five kidneys this week

Muhimbili National Hospital Mloganzila has started a special kidney transplant camp, the transplant is done using a modern method of harvesting a kidney from a donor using small holes (Hand Assisted Laporascopic Donor Nephrectomy).

According to the Specialist in Kidney Diseases, Dr. Immaculate Goima, the camp will be conducted by local experts in collaboration with a Specialist in Surgery from South Korea, Prof. Park Kwan Tae.

Dr. Goima added that during this period they will transplant kidneys to five patients whose relatives have decided to donate their kidneys to restore happiness and smiles to their relatives who have been going through various challenges due to kidney disease.

Dr. Goima has advised the community to continue to come forward to donate kidneys to their relatives because doing so will save them the cost and time of dialysis and added that there are no side effects that a person will experience if they donate a kidney to their relative.

The provision of kidney transplant services in the country is due to significant investment by the Government which has eliminated referrals to travel abroad to seek these services.

To date, Muhimbili National Hospital has performed kidney transplants on 99 patients since the service was launched in 2017, of which 11 patients have been transplanted at Muhimbili Mloganzila.
