THE Sixth Phase Government led by President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued to make significant investments in the Tanzania Meteorological Agency in terms of infrastructure and building staff capacity.
The statement was made by the Prime Minister, Mr. Kassim Majaliwa, on January 21, 2025 when he launched the World Meteorological Organization’s “Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) – Project” at the Midland Inn View Hotel, Dodoma.
Mr. Majaliwa said the Government’s goal in continuing to make these improvements is to facilitate the provision of weather forecasts and warnings of severe weather events.
He said that among the investments are the purchase of seven weather radars, the expansion of the National Meteorological Academy and the improvement of weather equipment by removing equipment that uses mercury in accordance with the requirements of the Minamata Convention.
The Prime Minister said that the Tanzanian Government in supporting the implementation of the SOFF project has allocated funds to purchase 11 Weather Stations.
These autonomous stations will contribute data to the Global Climate Network.
The Prime Minister said that the government is supporting by providing a contribution of more than 4 million US dollars which is the value of the contribution in the form of non-financial services (In-Kind contribution).
“All these efforts demonstrate the Government’s sincere commitment to improving weather infrastructure”, he said
Speaking about the launch of the SOFF project “SOFF – Investment Phase Project”, Mr. Majaliwa said that the project is of great importance not only for meeting the needs of weather and climate data for global weather forecasting, but also for the economic and social development of our country Tanzania.
He said that the move aims to enhance the availability and exchange of weather data internationally, thus enhancing weather services and warnings of severe weather events.
“Success in the implementation of SOFF will contribute greatly to strengthening resilience to adverse weather events for sustainable development in the country”, he said
He said the economies of many developing countries are highly dependent on sectors directly related to weather, which are agriculture, but also livestock, energy, water, health, mining and transport.
