Plants now have the capacity to generate 3,091 Megawatts of electricity – Kapinga

📌 109,918 new customers connected to electricity in the country 📌 Parliamentary Committee congratulates TANESCO 📌 Customers connected to electricity in the country have reached 5,225,193.

The government through the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) has said that the capacity of power plants connected to the National Grid system until December 2024 had the capacity to generate a total of 3,091.71 Megawatts.

A statement issued by Tannesco and distributed on the networks said that the increase is significant since in September 2024 the plants had the capacity to generate 2,842.96 Megawatts.

The statement continued to say that there was a total increase of 248.75 Megawatts, equivalent to 8.75 percent, between September and December.

The statement was read out by the Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga on January 16, 2024 in Dodoma while discussing the report of the Ministry of Energy on the state of electricity production and distribution in the country for the period from September to December, 2024 to members of the Parliament’s standing committee on Energy and Minerals.

“The increase was due to the entry of 235 Megawatts from the JNHPP Project and the Kigoma plants into the National Grid”, said Ms. Kapinga

She said TANESCO has continued to renovate various power generation plants including Kihansi, Kidatu and Ubungo to enable the Nation to have reliable electricity at all times.

Ms. Kapinga said the state of the electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure in the country continues to be good, which has contributed to the availability of reliable electricity to customers and the infrastructure includes electricity transmission lines with a total length of 8, 025.38 kilometers as well as electricity distribution lines with a length of 197, 597.34 kilometers.

Through this infrastructure, the Corporation has been able to connect 109,918 new customers within the period from September, 2024 to December, 2024. The increase in these customers has enabled the total number of customers connected to electricity in the country to reach 5,225,193.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Mr. David Mathayo David has commended the Ministry through TANESCO for continuing to strengthen the various power generation, distribution and transmission systems in various parts of the country.
