Tanzania and Kenya grids to strengthen access to electricity in the country – Engineer Nyamo-Hanga

Executive Director of Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) Engineer. Gissima Nyamo-Hanga has said that the strengthening of the Tanzanian and Kenyan Electricity Grid system will help strengthen access to electricity in the North East region of Africa.

Mhandisi.Gissima has said this, on December 20, 2024 during his visit accompanied by other leaders of the organization at the Lemuguru electricity receiving, cooling and shipping center located in Arusha Region.

“I encourage the experts in charge of the Grid system as you continue with the exercise of connecting the Tanzanian and Kenyan Grid systems to ensure that the exercise does not affect the availability of electricity on our Grid System in the country”, stressed the Engineer, Gissima.

Engineer Gissima has said that the Lemuguru station is important due to connecting the National Grid system with other Grid systems of countries in the North East African region (EAPP).

This regional integration of the Eastern African Power pool has a total of 13 member countries.

In addition to the integration of the electricity grid of Tanzania and the North East of Africa, Engineer Gissima has said that Tanzania is continuing with a project that will connect our grid with the systems of other grids in Southern Africa, namely the Southern African Power Pool.

Explaining the benefits that will be gained as a result of Tanzania participating in the regional market of electricity business by entering into a merger of selling and buying electricity for the North East region (EAPP) and the Southern Africa region (SAPP), Engineer Gissima said the country will benefit from selling electricity from and the large investment the Government is making in electricity production and transmission projects in the country.

The visit is a continuation of the working visit of the Organization’s Management to review the progress of projects implemented in various areas in the country where they started in the strategic project of hydroelectricity of the Julius Nyerere Dam (JNHPP).
