The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has invited European Union countries, especially the private sector, to come to Zanzibar to look at investment opportunities.
Dr. Mwinyi said that there are many areas that have not been reached, especially in the Blue Economy sector through Tourism, Ports, Oil and Gas as well as the maritime transport sector.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this, December 07, 2024, at the State House in Zanzibar when he spoke to a delegation from the European Commission led by Ms. Rita Laraujinha, Executive Director for External Relations, Africa Region who visited him.
The President, Dr. Mwinyi said Zanzibar is determined to have reliable electricity due to the expansion of economic activities, major development projects, the increase in tourist hotels and the pace of investment that is growing every day.
President Dr. Mwinyi has explained that for a long time, Zanzibar has been receiving 100 megawatts of electricity from mainland Tanzania through submarine cables which are currently insufficient, so there is every reason to get alternative electricity and consider having solar, wave or wind power, so he has asked the European Union (EU) to look into the possibility of assisting Zanzibar in that area.
President, Dr. Mwinyi has stressed the European Union to support Zanzibar in its quest to grow the economy through strategic sectors including the Blue Economy and Tourism which are priority sectors for the Government he leads.
He said, Zanzibar is developing modern tourism that includes conference hall tourism, sports and health where previously it was more focused on operating beach tourism and heritage sites which has been common for a long time.
Ms. Rita Laraujinha has commended Zanzibar for the cooperation they provide in EU-managed projects and assured President Dr. Mwinyi that they will continue to support Zanzibar in bringing about development especially in the areas of health, education and the Blue Economy.
