Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga has said that 99 percent of all villages in the country have been reached by electricity.
Mrs. Kapinga said this on November 08, 2024 in parliament in Dodoma when answering a question from the Member of Parliament for Special Seats, Mrs. Rehema Lugangira who asked if the Government does not see the need to review the REA contract to make it responsible for delivering electricity to service stations.
“The government through the Rural Energy Agency (REA) continues with the implementation of various projects to deliver electricity to villages where until October, 2024 approximately 99 percent of all villages have been reached by electricity.” said, Mrs. Kapinga
She said the implementation of rural electricity projects gives priority to institutions that provide services to the community, including schools, health centers, clinics, water pumps and religious institutions to improve the provision of services to citizens.
She went on to say that until September 2024, social institutions that have been electrified through REA are 12,905 education, 6,768 health, 5,872 water pumps, 8,822 houses of worship and 29,294 business places.
She said the Government will continue to manage the REA to ensure that it gives priority to the delivery of electricity to public institutions when it has completed rural electricity supply projects.
Answering a question about the similarity of the cost of connecting electricity to a house that has electricity and one that does not have electricity, Mrs. Kapinga said the basic costs of connecting electricity to a house include the cost of meters, wires and the cost of works that do not change.
