Mtwara, Ruvuma
A total of 1,526 citizens expect to benefit from the payment of compensation of 4.7 billion shillings after passing the 220 kilowatt electricity transmission line project from Tunduru to Masasi, which is the construction of a new Masasi power station located in Mtwara Region.

Speaking to citizens after being handed over the check on April 26, 2025, the Chairman of Sululu Village, Mr. Venant Kamtahule, despite thanking the Tanzania Electricity Corporation TANESCO for the payment, said the construction of the projects aimed at enhancing access to electricity that will stimulate economic activities and investment in cashew nut industries.

“We are truly grateful to TANESCO, approximately 16 of my fellow citizens from Sululu Village have benefited from the payment of compensation. This is a great achievement that we have been waiting for for a long time. We believe that this project will increase the availability of reliable electricity to the citizens”, said Mr. Venant.

TANESCO Manager in Masasi District, Engineer Kidala Maeda said that the compensation payment exercise has started since April 25, 2025 where he explained that this step will enable the Contractor to continue with construction especially at the Masasi Power Plant whose implementation is in the initial stages.

“As you know, these two regions of Lindi and Mtwara are not yet connected to the National Grid, we use gas machines from Mtwara but the Government saw that it is time for us, the people of the South, to get electricity through the National Grid so that we can benefit from the electricity generated from the Julius Nyerere Dam Hydropower Project which has been officially completed”, said Engineer Kidala.

The 220 kV transmission line project from Tunduru to Masasi and the construction of the Masasi power station will cost more than 70 billion shillings, with a total of 43 villages being served by the project in Masasi, Nanyumbu and Tunduru Districts.
