Arusha Region gets reliable electricity

📌210 MVA Transformer Installed

Arusha Region has now been enabled to get reliable electricity after the expansion of the Njiro Power Distribution and Transmission Station by adding a 210 MVA Transformer from the previous 90 MVA.

Speaking to citizens at the Tanganyika and Zanzibar unification celebrations in Arusha Region, immediately after launching the station on April 28, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko said that the Government has spent an amount of 5.2 Billion Shillings for the expansion of the Station to increase the capacity of the Station to match the increase in electricity consumption.

“In this zone, the electricity demand in Arusha Region is 107 megawatts, Tanga 126 megawatts, Manyara 14 megawatts, Kilimanjaro 68 megawatts and today we have launched the expansion of the Njiro Power Station which has ten electricity distribution lines in Arusha Region and enables this Region to meet electricity demand up to 200 megawatts compared to the current demand which is 107 megawatts” said, Dr. Biteko

DKt. Biteko said the Government is on an implementation plan to make improvements to the electricity infrastructure as per the instructions of the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to ensure that all dilapidated electricity infrastructure is renovated to transport electricity.

“We can have electricity in production but it became a challenge in infrastructure that is why, the President has now instructed us to make improvements to the electricity infrastructure so that we have reliable electricity”, said Dr. Biteko.

He said the Ministry of Energy intends to ensure that every Tanzanian gets a piece of the Energy cake, especially electricity.

“When I was appointed, I told TANESCO that you will not sleep and you all are witnessing that the electricity situation has changed not like ten years ago and TANESCO is really not sleeping they are doing a good job”, said Dr. Biteko.

The completion of the Center will improve the availability of electricity in the Northern Regions including Arusha Region and open it up economically by promoting the Tourism, Industry and Trade Sectors.
