PRIME MINISTER, Kassim Majaliwa has issued instructions to the Managers of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) to conduct regular inspections of all bridges and culverts on highways in the country to avoid possible impacts caused by rainwater.
He issued the order on April 16, 2025 when he inspected the progress of the repair of bridges in the Matandu and Somanga Mtama areas, Kilwa District, Lindi Region on the Dar es Salaam – Lindi highway that had been damaged following the rains in the country.
“The money we allocate for repairs should be used properly after heavy rains and they should be satisfied with the diameter of the bridge and the culverts as well”, he said
He has also instructed the Lindi Regional Tanroads Manager to work day and night to ensure that all areas affected by rainwater are repaired and restored to their normal condition.
He said the Government has a long-term plan to rebuild the Dar es Salaam, Lindi and Mtwara roads to standards, so the construction of bridges is the initial step of the strategic plan.
“We have allocated funds for the construction of 100 kilometers, we have done this to avoid patching patches instead of rebuilding the entire rough area”
,
He has also assured road users that no activity will stop while the Government is in place and will continue to monitor the progress of the road’s strengthening.
“The goal is to ensure that the Government is at work and has brought in contractors, this is due to the instructions of our President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan”, he said, Mr. Majaliwa and assured residents of Lindi and Mtwara regions that President Dr. Samia has provided funds for the construction and repair of sections damaged by the ongoing rains.
The Minister for Works, Mr. Abdallah Ulega said that so far the contractor has placed 23 out of 43 pillars for the construction of a permanent bridge in the Somanga area.
