Njombe residents ask TANESCO and REA to speed up electricity supply

NJOMBE: Residents of Njombe Region who are still not covered by electricity service have requested the Government through the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA) to speed up the process of connecting them to electricity so that they can use it for economic and social activities.

This was stated by the Village Leaders of Melela, Mtwango, Lwangu and Lupembe during a visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals that aimed to review the progress of the rural electricity supply project in villages in Njombe Region on March 18, 2025.

The leaders said that residents have become more motivated to connect to electricity after seeing the progress improving in some households that are already connected to electricity.

They thanked the Sixth Phase Government for providing funds for implementing development projects including electricity in their areas where in recent years they have been seeing a rapid pace of development.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga has reassured the citizens by explaining that the Government’s goal is to ensure that all citizens have access to electricity by 2030.

She has explained that development in all areas is carried out in stages as is the case with electricity projects but the Government’s goal is for all citizens to be provided with services.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Mr. Mathayo David has urged citizens to continue laying cables in their homes so that when electricity projects arrive, they can be connected quickly.

She has explained that citizens who do not need to lay cables should come to TANESCO offices to be provided with a ready-made electrical device (UMETA) at a cost of only 27,000 shillings.
