The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that the Government will continue to support the Movement of the Association of Women Representatives (UWAWAZA) to empower women in their political, economic and social development.
President Dr. Mwinyi said this when he spoke to members of the Association who arrived at the State House to introduce themselves and congratulate Dr. Mwinyi.
Dr. Mwinyi said that the Association is an important voice in fighting for women’s rights inside and outside the House of Representatives and promised to continue supporting it so that they can achieve their goals.
He said that he is pleased with the work being done by the Association to strengthen participation and increase the number of women members in the House of Representatives as experience shows that women are doing well in leadership.
President Dr. Mwinyi has used the opportunity to encourage women to come forward to contest for leadership positions in the upcoming elections in order to increase their number in the House of Representatives.
President Dr. Mwinyi has advised UWAWAZA to conduct a 22-year review since its establishment to identify key areas that require Government support to uplift Women, Politically, Economically and socially.
The Chairperson of the Women Representatives Association, Mrs. Saada Mkuya Salum has congratulated Dr. Mwinyi on the success of the construction of road infrastructure, markets, hospitals and health centers which have been important resources for the well-being of women.
