Government builds new gas filling stations for vehicles

The Government through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has been commended for the construction of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) main station and two small stations to receive and store CNG for existing customers.

The commendations were given on January 25, 2025 by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Mr. David Mathayo David during a visit to inspect the construction of the gas filling station being built at the University of Dar es Salaam and to witness the development of the Kinyerezi natural gas receiving station.

“We commend the Government for receiving the advice of Parliament to build this large gas filling station for vehicles which will help other small stations to take gas from this station to fill vehicles in other areas”, said Mr. David

The Parliamentary Committee has advised the Government to consider the best way to distribute gas transportation infrastructure so that it can reach many areas in the country to continue providing opportunities for citizens to operate machines using natural gas instead of oil as is customary.

Mr. David said transporting gas through a pipeline network is cheaper than using vehicles, and gas should be used in all regions as it will reduce the use of foreign exchange to import fuels such as diesel and petrol.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga said that in parallel with the station providing CNG for distribution in small stations that are not connected to the gas distribution pipeline infrastructure, there will be a CNG filling service for all types of vehicles including trucks, buses, small passenger cars and three-wheeled motorcycles (bajaji).

“The station will be able to service eight vehicles at a time and will provide this service to 1,200 vehicles per day and this is the station with the largest capacity of all the stations currently in the country,” said Kapinga.

She said the cost of the construction of the project is 18,946,766,486/- which is divided into three contracts Mother station, Muhimbili station and Kairuki station and all the money is being funded by the Government through TPDC.

Mr. Kapinga said the Government through the Ministry of Energy continues to encourage the private sector to participate in the construction of gas filling stations for vehicles, which has been well received.

These stations are being built to ensure that gas filling services for vehicles are available in various parts of the country, starting with Dar es Salaam.
