In celebrating Christmas and New Year 2025, Tanzanians should be proud of the successful journey in the Energy Sector, especially electricity.
Did you know that before gaining independence in 1961, the country produced electricity using oil where each region was independent and there was no national grid system?
The Journey of Transformation began in 1967 with the construction of the Hale megawatt power station with a capacity of 21 megawatts along with the construction of the power line from Hale to Dar es Salaam and thus the start of the National Grid system.
Due to electrical energy being the catalyst for economic growth, the implementation of various electrical projects continued where in 1968 the construction of the Nyumba ya Mungu power station of 8 megawatts was done, in 1975 the Kidatu Station of 204 megawatts was built along with the construction of the Kidatu – Morogoro – Dar es Salaam power line.
The Journey of Change continued through the Heads of State of various phases that led to the construction of Mtera power stations (80MW) in 1988 and the construction of the Mtera – Iringa, Mtera – Dodoma power line and thus increased the national grid network.
Then followed the power generating stations of New Pangani Falls (68MW) in 1995, the construction of power generating stations using natural gas in Songas (189MW) in 2006, Tegeta Gas Engine (45MW) in 2009, Ubungo I (102MW) in 2008, Ubungo II (129MW) in 2012 and Ubungo III (92.5MW) in 2012, Kinyerezi I (335MW) in 2023 and Kinyerezi II (248.2MW) in 2018.
The work has not ended there as the implementation of electricity projects using various sources continues, a real example is the JNHPP project which now produces more than 1000 megawatts together with the Rusumo project which provides Tanzania with 26.667 megawatts.
In addition to generating enough electricity, the Government through the Ministry of Energy continues to strengthen the national grid system to ensure that the entire country is reached by the national grid network and thus further strengthen the availability of electricity in the country.
WE ARE PROUD of this great step taken in the Energy Sector.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2025.
