Tanzania and the European Union to cooperate in Mineral Research

*The EU promises to cooperate with the Government in practical training for mining experts *The government emphasizes that value addition is a priority in strategic mining

The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania promises to continue to cooperate with the European Union (EU) in conducting detailed research that will help to obtain accurate information on where minerals are found in order to increase investment in harvesting mineral resources.

This was said on December 11, 2024 in Dar es Salaam by the Minister of Mines, Mr. When Anthony Mavunde met a delegation from the EU led by Mr. Hanspaul Stausboll who is the Director of EU Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Research is the heart of the mining sector and that is why the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has prioritized deep mineral research through an ambitious strategy known as Vision 2030 which aims to increase the research area from the current 16 percent to 50 percent by the year 2030. It is obvious that this task is huge and the Government cannot do it alone without stakeholders. , he said

“The good news is that the Government has already started working with the EU in research through the Spanish Embassy in the country. There are areas that we have identified for a project to conduct a detailed study of launching aircraft and we are in the final stages of starting the project with great benefits for our country”, added Minister Mavunde.

Minister Mavunde noted that the talks with the EU delegation are focused on strengthening cooperation on the development of the mining sector while being influenced by the fact that Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world blessed with various minerals including strategic ones like graphite which is an attraction for many investors due to the trend of the world in reducing carbon dioxide by 2050 through the use of clean energy.

“The second area we talked about is the area to increase the value of our minerals in the country instead of exporting them raw where the country is losing income, employment and welfare of Tanzanians. These are the instructions of our President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan wants factories to add value to minerals to be built in the country, this has also been emphasized by our mining policy” he insisted, Mr. Damage.

He said, various projects are ongoing in the country including a large project being built in Ngara, in the Kagera region of Nickel involving the Tembo Nickel Company in which the Government is a shareholder.

Through the Nickel project where the big BHP Company is entering as an investor, a large metal ore refining plant is going to be built in Kahama in the Buzwagi Special Economic Zone which will have a value of more than 500 Million Dollars.

Minister Mavunde explained the opportunity that exists in the project for young people and women in the mining sector known as ‘Mining for Brighter Tomorrow’ (MBT) and gave an opinion to the EU to provide more cooperation in the program so that it can bring productivity in reaching the upper middle class economy and increase the income of a Tanzanian is twice what it is now by the time the goals of the Development Vision 2050 have been stated.

The Director of EU Projects for Africa South of the Sahara Desert, Mr. Hanspaul Stausboll expressed his satisfaction with the measures taken by the Government in the development of the mining sector and stressed that the EU is ready to cooperate with Tanzania in the implementation of various priority projects including research, construction of technical structures in mining areas and practical training to increase skills for Tanzanians.
