The Executive Director of Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO), Engineer, Gissima Nyamo-Hanga has said that TANESCO appreciates the contributions made by private stakeholders to the development in strengthening the energy sector in the country.
Engineer, Nyamo-Hanga has said this in Mombasa in Kenya while giving a presentation on Tanzania’s Electricity Sector in a meeting that brings together the East African Member States (EAPP) and various stakeholders in the electricity sector.
“We recognize the participation of Development stakeholders in increasing the electricity business in Tanzania by financing the infrastructure of the electricity system in the areas of electricity production and electricity distribution systems”, said the Engineer, Nyamo-Hanga.
Regarding private investors in the electricity sector, Engineer Nyamo-Hanga said that in terms of electricity production there are investors and added that currently there are no private investors in terms of electricity supply and in terms of the electricity transmission system is run by the Government through TANESCO.
Engineer Nyamo-Hanga added that the Government continues to look at the best way to involve the private sector in the construction and operation of electricity transmission systems without affecting the stability of those systems.
Explaining the benefits that will be gained from Tanzania participating in the regional electricity business market by entering into a merger of selling and buying electricity in the East (EAPP) and Southern Africa (SAPP).
Engineer Nyamo-Hanga said the country will benefit from selling electricity due to the large investment the Government is making in the area of electricity production.
He said that geographically, Tanzania is located in the middle of the countries in the North of Africa when they need to trade electricity with the countries in the South of Africa and it will be necessary to transmit electricity in the electricity transport infrastructure of Tanzania, so the country will benefit from getting foreign money.
He also said that on the other hand there will be stability of the grid through the close integration of the regional grid.
An integrated regional grid will provide an opportunity to integrate renewable energy through shared systems savings, increased security of electricity supply and opportunities to sell/buy cheap electricity from the regional market
