Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has started preparations for liver transplantation, which is a step towards the implementation of the Government’s commitment to provide the best services in the country.
MNH is doing this in order to move those services closer to the citizens that did not exist due to expertise, diagnostic equipment or the appropriate infrastructure to provide those services, thus costing a lot of money to send those patients to be treated abroad.
Speaking to the media in Dar es Salaam, the Executive Director of MNH, Prof. Mohamed Janabi has said that the hospital has entered into an agreement with various hospitals in the world that have that knowledge to start preparations in collaboration with national experts to ensure that by the end of 2025, Tanzania starts providing the service.
“This week we have collaborated with experts from Fortis Hospital in India who have worked with our doctors where for three days they have seen more than 100 patients with various challenges of liver diseases and appreciate the availability of drugs, laboratory infrastructure, ICU that meets the needs of that service”, emphasized Prof. Mr.
Liver transplant champion, Dr. Gaurav Gupta from Fortis Hospital and Business Director from Vaidam Health, Mrs. Jenifer Choudhary has emphasized that they will provide the necessary cooperation and expertise to ensure that MNH reaches the goal of establishing this service in this country.
Doctor Specialist in Surgery for Diseases of the Food System and Liver and Specialist in Surgery through Tundu Dogo, Dr. Kitembo Salumu said, until now the statistics of the Hospital show that there are more than 5,000 patients with liver problems, of which 2,333 have tumors in the liver and 607 have been diagnosed with liver cancer, others have shriveled livers so they all need liver transplant services.
