Taifa Muhimbili Hospital [NMH] – Mloganzila has introduced two new state-of-the-art services for diabetic patients.
These services include the treatment of foot diseases caused by diabetes and a special diabetes clinic for young people aged 18 to 25 years, known as transitional care.
The establishment of these services in the hospital here is the Government’s continuation of improving health services in the country, including the introduction of state-of-the-art treatment that is not available in this country as a strategy to reduce the inconvenience to the citizens and the costs of seeking such services abroad.
Inaugurating the clinics on behalf of the Executive Director, Head of the Training, Research and Professional Consulting Division of MNH who is also a Diabetes and Hormone Specialist, Dr. Faraja Chiwanga said that these services will increase the scope of services at the hospital here so that citizens can benefit from the investment made by their government.
“For example, this transitional clinic is the first in this country, it will be serving young people aged 18 to 25 who need care and advice differently compared to patients in other groups” Dr. Comfort Chiwanga
Diabetes and Hormone Specialist, Dr. Aidan Banduka has said that there has been an increase in the number of patients served in the clinic due to the quality of the services provided, where they see between 80 and 160 patients per day, where from December, 2022 to 2024, they have served more than 30,000 patients, of which 6,535 are new.
Dr. Banduka said the community should protect themselves from this disease by following a healthy lifestyle based on good nutrition, reducing the use of salt and fat, stopping the use of tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption and exercising regularly.
The launch of these services has gone hand in hand with the celebration of World Diabetes Day which is celebrated on November 14 every year where the motto of this year 2024 is “diabetes and better health, encouraging awareness of the effects of diabetes on physical and mental health for patients with diabetes”.
