Thousands of citizens of the town of Mbamba Bay, Nyasa District came out to meet and listen to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Chairman of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, when she arrived to launch the road project and lay the foundation stone for the construction of the port, 25 September 2024.
In that event, President Dr. Samia launched the Mbinga – Mbamba Bay road with a length of 66 kilometers which has been completed to the asphalt level, she attended to lay the foundation stone for the construction of the Mbamba Bay Port.
The road is of great importance in strengthening economic activities and production, especially in areas famous for coffee and corn cultivation.
The road construction project, which cost 122.76 billion shillings, has been managed by the Ministry of Construction through the Roads Agency (TANROADS).
In implementing this project, an amount of 637.4 million shillings was used to pay compensation to citizens who stopped construction in accordance with the law.
The Mbinga – Mbamba Bay road is part of the Mtwara Corridor (Mtwara Corridor) with a total length of 826 kilometers, starting from Mtwara to Mbamba Bay. It also connects Ruvuma Region with Mtwara Region as well as Mbeya Region with neighboring Malawi through Lake Nyasa.
President Dr. Samia, before concluding his visit to Nyasa district by speaking to the public at a public meeting held at the Port Square, laid the foundation stone for the construction of Mbamba Bay Port. When the port is completed, it is expected to be one of the important tools to stimulate wealth production activities and promote the economy and become an important link for the transportation of goods and people in Lake Nyasa, in Tanzania and neighboring countries, especially Malawi.
