National grid electricity reached the GGML Geita mine

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko has launched a project for a 33/11 kilowatt power receiving and cooling station for the Geita Gold Mine ‘GGML’. The station is connected directly to the National Grid from the Mpomvu cooling station, Geita.

A statement issued today by Tanesco and distributed to the media said that the project involved the construction of 33 kilowatt power transmission lines with a length of 5.5 kilometers using concrete poles and a 0.66 kilometer long section using steel poles with capacity to transport 45 megawatts ie 22.5 megawatts each. Tanesco has financed the project with 8 billion shillings.

The statement said, after the launch, Dr. Biteko said the GGM project is an example of history in the electricity sector in our country as its high level of consumption exceeds some regions and leads to it being a major contributor to the national income.

The statement went on to say that the project has ensured the availability of electricity, thus increasing the efficiency of mining operations, where the government will increase income in gold mining and Tanesco will negotiate an amount of 3 to 3 billion shillings per month. The use of electricity will also increase from 10 megawatts. up to 34.

The statement went on to say that GGML after the completion of the project in May, 2024 has saved more than 5 billion shillings which were used to buy fuel for generators to produce electricity.

The statement concluded by saying that Tanesco in the Geita region expects to increase customers as it is currently conducting a feasibility study to increase the capacity of the Mpomvu cooling station by strengthening the 220 Kilowatt Msongo electricity transmission line from Bulyhahulu to Geita.
