Tanzanians should work together to eradicate gender violence – Prime Minister

PRIME MINISTER Kassim Majaliwa has called on the Tanzanian community to cooperate with the government and civil society organizations to combat acts of violence against women, children and people with disabilities in the country.

He has said that in order to get quick results, community members should be involved from the stage of planning strategies that will be used to implement plans concerning their communities.

He said that yesterday when he represented the President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in the charity race to eradicate gender-based violence against women, children and the disabled (STOP GENDER BASED VIOLENCE) concluded at the Forodhani grounds in Zanzibar.

In addition, Mr. Majaliwa, he has instructed Government Departments and Organizations to strengthen cooperation with civil organizations that implement interventions to eradicate gender violence.

“Since governments have prepared national plans and strategies, civil organizations should carry out their activities based on those plans to speed up the resolution of gender challenges.”

Honorable Majaliwa has said the Government in implementing the Legal Aid Law no. 1 of 2017, has enabled special groups, including women and children, to obtain their rights in law enforcement agencies.

“The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has been providing legal aid to victims of incidents of sexual abuse where more than 1,700 victims have been given legal and psychological aid in the year 2022/2023.”

He added that the Government has already created desks and centers for the protection and safety of children and to provide basic services to the victims of incidents of sexual violence.

“in terms of Mainland Tanzania; 1,850 desks in 1,128 primary and secondary schools until September, 2023. In terms of middle and higher education, 273 desks have been established until June 2023.”

He said that in Zanzibar, a total of 40 desks have been created in Police stations to speed up the provision of services to victims of sexual violence.

In addition, seven centers to provide services at the same place have been established in Mnazi Mmoja, Makunduchi and Kivunge; Also Wete, Regional, Chake Chake and Micheweni.

The Prime Minister has also instructed Government Departments and Organizations to strengthen cooperation with civil organizations that implement interventions to eradicate gender-based violence.

On the other hand, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Tabia Maulid Mwita, said the Government of the President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi is determined to ensure that it controls acts of sexual violence.

And the Director General of the Asma Foundation, Asma Ali Mwinyi has said that the charity race is aimed at collecting 500 million shillings which will be used to empower women, children and the disabled who have experienced the challenges of sexual violence.
