Petrol and Diesel prices are falling in Tanzania

**Petrol drops to Shs 91/- per litre **Diesel drops by Shs 120/- per litre ** Kerosene at Sh 136/- per litre

Dar es Salaam. The pain for the users of fire engines in the country will decrease slightly in September once the price of petrol and diesel oil has dropped due to the decrease in import costs and the average cost of changing foreign currency rates.

According to the information provided by EWURA, the drop in price is due to the drop in oil prices in the world market on average (weighted average).

In August 2024, the owners of fire engines had to tighten their belts immediately after the retail price of petrol increased by Sh 21/- where one liter was sold at Sh 3,231/- while diesel increased by Sh16 and was sold at Sh 3,131/- per liter.

Information released by the Tanzania Energy and Water Services Regulatory Authority (Ewura) on September 4, 2024 states that the retail price of petrol imported through the Port of Dar es Salaam has dropped by Sh 91/- where one liter is now sold at Sh 3,140/-.

The retail price of diesel imported through the Port of Dar es Salaam has also dropped by Sh120 where one liter is now sold at Sh3,011/-.

Kerosene in Dar es Salaam has dropped by Sh156 where it is now sold at Sh3,121/- from Sh3,257/- recorded in August.

In terms of oil imported through Tanga Port, one liter of petrol will be bought for Sh3,141 from Sh3,229/- last month.

People who use fuel that passed through Mtwara Port will buy petrol at Sh3,142 per liter from Sh3,304 in August 2024, diesel at Sh3,021 from Sh3,140 and kerosene at Sh3,194 from Sh3,329 last month.

According to Ewura, the decrease in oil prices for the month of September 2024 is due to the decrease in the prices of processed oil (FOB) in the world market on average (weighted average) for petrol, diesel and kerosene.

“The limit price of oil has been calculated based on the prices of the Arabian market in August 2024. In comparison with the prices of July 2024, the prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene in August 2024 have decreased by an average of 7.68 percent, 6.22 percent and 6.20 percent , respectively,” noted Ewura’s statement.

However, the recovery in the price of oil in the country does not reduce the pain for consumers of that energy, especially those with low incomes due to the small drop.

For example, a user who was spending Sh10,000 to get 3.09 liters of petrol in Dar es Salaam at the new price announced today will get 3.18 liters of fuel, which is a little cheaper.

For diesel users, the situation is the same with today’s new price where a buyer with Sh10,000 will get 3.32 liters from the 3.18 liters he was getting in August.
