The private power generation company Madope located in Ludewa district in Njombe region, has reached an agreement with the Government to hand over the infrastructure to transport and distribute electricity to the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) after signing a contract.
Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Judithi Kapinga said this while visiting the villages of Lubonde and Maweni in Ludewa district in Njombe region the other day.
Mrs. Kapinga said the government appreciates the great work done by the Catholic Church in collaboration with the government on investment in various sectors.
Mrs. Kapinga has pointed out that the intention of the government in the sixth phase is to ensure that the people get development and added that the government will continue to cooperate with private electricity producers in the country.
Speaking about rural electricity supply, Ms. Kapinga has said that only 151 villages in the whole country have not yet received electricity service out of more than 12,000 villages, Ludewa district has only 8 villages left.
Mrs. Kapinga has instructed the rural energy agency (REA) to supervise the contractor implementing the Ludewa electricity projects so that he completes the work on time in the remaining 8 villages out of the 20 existing villages in the Ludewa district.
Mrs. Kapinga has stressed that the government’s goal is to continue producing more electricity due to the increasing demand every day but also the presence of projects that send electricity outside of Tanzania.
The Chairman of the Board of Madope Company, Father Innocent Ngailo has said that the Njombe Catholic Church wrote a letter to the government requesting TANESCO to receive the electricity infrastructure owned by Madope and thanked the Government for responding to the request.
Father Innocent Ngailo has noted that the Madope Company itself will retain the job of generating electricity which it will sell to TANESCO.
“We promise TANESCO that we will cooperate with them and we will work together to ensure that the people get reliable electricity.” Father Ngailo said
The Manager of TANESCO Njombe Region, Engineer Abdulrahaman Nyenye has promised the people of those villages that TANESCO will come to provide education and warn them to stay away from axes.
Engineer Nyenye added that approximately 20 villages that were served by the Madope Company will now be served by TANESCO.
The madope project is owned by the Catholic Church for 55%, Ludewa Council 45% and the Community of Mass Electricity Users (JUWUMA) 5%
